Artist Statement
My
paintings take the element of water as a subject. Using a
combination of photography, memory and artistic license, I strive to
capture the elusive layers, subtle reflections, myriad colors and
luminosities inherent in water.
As a longtime canoeist, I am fascinated by the infinite visual
effects of watery surfaces. Whether in hypnotic ocean waves, a
trickling river flow or a lake’s moonlit sheen, water’s form is
ever-changing. Portraying the variety of its essence on canvas is my
challenge and focus.
Using oil paints, I begin by mapping out large areas of color. I add
details as I go, letting the paint dry between layers. I create
depth through a combination of techniques, including glazing and
painting wet on dry. The result is a painting that is abstract, yet
photorealistic. Upon close inspection, individual brush strokes and
wide splotches of color are apparent; but from a distance, the image
synthesizes into a recognizable whole.
